SGA® - Global Active Stretching

SGA® - Global Active Stretching

Ph. E. Souchard is a renowned French physiotherapist responsible for creating the method of Global Postural Re-education - RPG.

“According to the RPG website - Souchard RPG: "... consists of adjustments in posture to reorganize the segments of the human body, allowing the reorganization and rebalancing of the muscles thatmaintain posture. It identifies and lengthens the muscles considered responsible for postural alteration."

Since this technique was designed for individualized work, Ph.E. Souchard felt the need to restructure the method, to be able to apply it to groups, while maintaining its effectiveness, logic and principles, which gave rise to Global Active Stretching - SGA.

SGA is a stretching method with a special emphasis on breathing work and on muscle chains (Souchard, 1996), having, as objectives, the re-establishment of strength, length and flexibility of the muscle groups which are shortened and tense (Grau, 2003). According to Grau (2003), SGA stands out from other methods of stretching and postural re-education because it is based on these five principles

1

Muscles are organised in the form of muscle chains

The stretching of a muscle in one muscle chain is recovered at another end of that chain, hence the importance of stretching the whole muscle chain to avoid compensations.
2

Muscles have different physiologies

It is necessary to lengthen a muscle in all of its physiologies simultaneously, in other words, we have to put tension in all three planes of movement at the same time.
3

Muscle stretching follows the principles of physics with regard to viscoelastic materials

As in viscoelastic materials the stretching depends on the force of stretching "F", the time of stretching "T" and the coefficient of elasticity of the muscle "&".

Stretch obtained = F*T/&
4

Stretching is always active and global

There is always muscular activation in the SGA stretches, using a minimum force of approximately one hundred grams.
5

Breathing is key

This is the key point in relation to traditional stretches. In all postures it is necessary to have a special focus on breathing and to continue to put the target muscles in constant tension.

To carry out the exercises or, more correctly, the postures or self postures there is no need for specific equipment, a wall and an exercise mat being sufficient in most cases.

This is a widespread method in both the therapeutic and sporting communities, with several examples of its application in top level competition.

SGA should only be taught by certified professionals in order to minimise risks and maximise the benefits.
